For more than 15 years now, Nepal has been a leader in advancing LGBT rights in Asia and around the world. It all began with a major court decision in 2007, known as Pant v. Nepal. The court told the government to recognize a third gender option, check all laws for discrimination against LGBT people, and set up a committee to look into recognizing same-sex relationships. The government found more than 100 laws that were unfair to LGBT people and needed to be changed. By early 2015, a committee chosen by the government recommended that same-sex marriage should become legal, marking a big step forward for equality in Nepal.
In July 2023, Nepal Mountain Academy trained its first batch of guides to specifically cater to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex or queer (LGBTIQ+) trekkers. This milestone reflects a growing acceptance of LGBT individuals in Nepali society. While many people in Nepal are open and non-judgmental towards the LGBT community, public displays of affection that are sexually inclusive are generally not accepted due to traditional social norms. Despite this, Nepal continues to welcome tourists from all backgrounds with respect, showcasing its hospitality and cultural diversity.
