The Indra Jatra festival celebrates the victory of the gods over demons to release Jayanta, son of Lord Indra. Also known as Kumari Jatra, it honors Lord Indra, the god of rain and harvest.
The festival falls on the fourth day of the waxing moon in the month of Bhadra as per the lunar calendar, spanning seven days in the Kathmandu Valley, Kavre, and Dolakha.
King Gunakamadeva started the festival in the 18th century, naming it after Lord Indra, revered as the god of rain and the King of heaven.
Festivities include the hoisting of a 36-foot Linga wooden pole, chariot processions of living goddess Kumari, Ganesh, and Bhairav, along with singing, mask dancing, and communal rejoicing.
