OUR Overview

One of the famous places for the Kathmandu – Pokhara – Jomsom – Muktinath tour package is the Muktinath temple, known as ‘the Lord of Liberation’. Muktinath temple is the religious place for both hindus and buddhists which is situated in the Mustang district; central region of nepal. It is one of the world’s highest temples at an altitude of 3,710 m; located in the Muktinath valley at the foot of Thorong La mountain pass. Muktinath temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and has a built-in pagoda style.

As for Hindu call the site Mukti Kshetra and one of the Chaar Dham of Nepal, which literally means the “Place of Salvation” and is one of the most ancient temples of the God Vishnu and the Vaishnava tradition in nepal. The Vishnu Purana and Gandaki Mahathmya describe the spiritual importance of Muktinath Temple. According to Sri Vaishnava literature, its earliest name was Thiru Saligramam. The Kali Gandaki river bed downstream from Muktinath is the sole source of the rare Shaligram stones, the non-anthropomorphic representation of Vishnu.

Buddhists call Muktinath Chumig Gyatsa, which in Tibetan means ‘Hundred Water’; one of the 24 meditating spots. The area of the temple also has a significant location for 21 tara and many Dakinis, Goddesses known as Sky Dancers. Buddhists worship Murti as Avalokiteshwar.

Behind the temple is a semi-circular wall with 108 bull faces through which water is poured. 108 Sacred stone water spouts / Mukti Dhara; at a height of seven feet; flowing with icy cold water from Gandaki river where devotees take a quick bath. The 108 holy water spouts represent to cleanse their sins and attain spiritual purity and also believe that they break the cycle of birth and death. The number 108 carries great significance in Eastern philosophy. In Hindu astrology, there are 12 zodiacs or Rashi and 9 planets or Graha, giving a total of 108 combinations. There are also 27 Lunar mansions or Nakshatras, which are divided in 4 quarters, or Padas each giving a combination of 108 Padas in total.

In front of the temple, there are 2 holy water ponds / Mukti Kundha; also known as Laxmi Saraswati Kunda. The two holy water ponds at Muktinath Temple are believed to cleanse negative karma and erase the effects of past negative actions.

Nearby is the temple of Jwala Mai, or the Goddess of Flame; continuously burning natural gas fire with the phenomenal underground blue flame.
